Burl Wood Formed when a tree experiences stress or injury, dormant buds activate & grow randomly to help protect the tree, forming Burl Wood. This creates an external burl or knot, & can be found along the tree base, trunk or branches. Scientists do not completely understand the process in which trees produce burls. Burl wood isn’t simply rare—it’s evidence that imperfections are beautiful, especially since no two pieces of burl wood are exactly alike.
