The Yomut are one of the five great Turkmen tribes, their weaving tradition inscribed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This rug was woven by Yomut weavers in Turkmenistan, carrying a design vocabulary passed down through generations entirely from memory.
What sets Yomut rugs apart from other Turkmen weaving is the guls are typically diamond or hexagonal in form, arranged in diagonal rows across the field, with intricate borders that frame the design without competing with it.
This rug is hand-knotted from hand-spun wool on a wool foundation, from the tribe\'s own flocks. Traditionally, a Yomut woman\'s weaving skill was a mark of her family\'s standing, a bride would weave rugs for her dowry, and the quality of her work reflected the reputation of her entire tribe.
